Foods to Avoid If You Have Renal Failure

2013-01-17 15:24

Diet is one important aspect for renal failure patients. Reasonable foods and nutritions can reduce retention of metabolic wastes and slow down progression and worsening of renal failure. On the contrary, improper foods can have direct impact on hindering recovery of renal failure.

There are certain foods that renal failure patients should avoid.

High-potassium

Due to declined renal function, the kidneys can not balance potassium metabolism and patients always have hyperkalemia which will cause life-threatening illness conditions such as cardiac arrhythmia, low blood pressure, cardiac arrest, breathing stagnation, etc. Therefore low-potassium diets and the intake of potassium binder when necessary is very important for renal failure patients.

High-phosphorus

Renal failure patients often have secondary hyperparathyroidism, skin itching and bone problem due to high serum phosphorus and low calcium level. Limiting the intake of phosphorus through diets can alleviate skin itching and bone problems such as osteoporosis and bone fracture.

Do not have too much the following foods---animal offals, broth, bean products, nuts (peanut, walnut, pistachios, etc)

High-sodium

Too much salt intake can worsen retention of water and sodium retention and make blood pressure harder to be controlled. Fast foods, restaurant foods, highly processed foods and canned foods are all not good choice for renal failure patients. It is good to replace salt with some herbal condiments such as cinnamon which also has the effects of lowering creatinine level.

High-fat

Renal failure patients especially those that have hypertension and anemia should limit high-fat and high-cholesterol foods such as fat meat, egg yolk and animal liver.

Renal failure patients should avoid spicy and stimulating food such as sea products.

If renal failure is caused by diabetes or patients begin to develop high blood glucose, high-sugar foods should also be limited.

Besides all the above mentioned food restrictions, there are many foods that renal failure patients can eat and some are good for them. For more suggestions, you can email to kidneyfailure@hotmail.com or consult our online doctors.
