How to Improve GFR with Kidney Failure

2013-03-28 16:21

GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate) can be improved for patients with kidney failure. By GFR, we can how well the kidney is function. For people with chronic kidney disease, kidney failure is diagnosed when GFR decreases to 15. Dialysis or kidney transplant will be needed to purify blood when GFR decreases to a certain level, so improving GFR will help kidney failure patients get far away from dialysis and kidney transplant. Well then, how to improve GFR with kidney failure at all?

GFR can be simply understand as how much blood kidneys filter within limited time. For a healthy individual, his GFR value should be in the range 90-120mL/min/1.73m2. In kidney, glomerular filtration membrane perform the function of filtering blood and when this membrane is damaged, blood pass through it within limited time decreases and GFR decreases. Another factor that can affect GFR is blood flow in kidney. For a kidney failure patient, improvement of GFR can be achieved by increasing blood flow in kidney and repairing kidney damages to enlarge the area of filtration membrane.

Glomerular filtration membrane is composed of several kidney intrinsic cells and a basilar membrane which have self-repairing ability when they are damaged. However, when the damage is out of their self-repairing ability, they will die and area of filtration membrane reduces. Therefore, we can increase the self-repairing ability of them, some of them will recover and area of filtration membrane increases. Also, GFR increases. At present, Chinese medicines are always applied to increase the immunity of these damaged renal intrinsic cells. Chinese medicines used in kidney failure have function to extend blood vessels, fight against inflammation, fight against coagulation and degrade extracellular matrix. Among these functions, extending of blood vessels will help to increase blood flow in kidney, which to some extent also help kidney failure patients increase GFR.

Kidney failure can not be cured, and for patients with kidney failure, their GFR can not be increased to the normal range, because these dead kidney intrinsic cells can not be revived. However, as long as GFR is improved effectively, kidney failure patients have chance to avoid dialysis or kidney transplant. GFR can not be improved when all the kidney tissues are necrotic, so it is necessary for kidney failure patients to size the chance to improve GFR before all their kidney tissues are necrotic completely.
